Recipe for Palak Dal

Give a healthy twist to your regular dal recipe by adding palak to it. Palak not only adds to the flavor and texture but also adds the nutrition quotient of the dish. Try this simple recipe instead of a regular dal or sabzi.

  • 1 Cup Spinach (chopped)
  • 1 Cup Yellow Moong Dal (raw)
  • ½ Cup Tomatoes (Tamatar) (finely chopped)
  • ½ Cup Onion (Pyaaz) (finely chopped)
  • 2 Teaspoons Garlic ( लहसुन) (paste)
  • ½ Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Green Chillies (finely chopped)
  • Salt to taste


  1. Soak the dal in enough water for 30 minutes. And pressure cook it by adding salt and turmeric powder.
  2. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan, add the cumin seeds.
  3. When the seeds crackle add the green chilies, garlic and onions. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 - 2 minutes.
  4. Add spinach, mix well and cook 3 to 4 minutes or till the spinach is cooked.
  5. Add the tomatoes, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 - 2 minutes.
  6. Add the cooked dal and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 4-5 minutes while stirring continuosly.
  7. Add the coriander leaves and serve hot.
