Recipe for Oats Upma

A traditional South Indian breakfast favorite made with the goodness of heart healthy oats. The variety of vegetables added to it provide the dish the necessary crunch and texture. Enjoy this heart warming recipe with your cup of morning tea.

INGREDIENTS

  • ¾ Cup Semolina (Rawa)
  • ½ Cup Oats
  • ½ Cup Carrots (गाजर) (finely chopped and boiled)
  • ½ Cup Green Peas (Matar) (boiled)
  • ½ Cup Tomatoes (Tamatar) (finely chopped)
  • 2 Teaspoons Green Chillies (Hari Mirch) (finely chopped)
  • ½ Teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 8 Pieces Curry Leaves
  • 1 Teaspoon Lemon juice
  • 2 Teaspoons Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Oil
  • Salt to taste

METHOD

  1. Lightly roast the oats in a pan, without oil, on a slow flame and keep aside.
  2. Bring 5 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds.
  4. When the seeds crackle, add the curry leaves and green chilies.
  5. Immediately add the semolina and roast on a slow flame for 5 - 7 minutes on a slow flame.
  6. Add the carrots and peas. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
  7. Add the roasted oats, mix well and saute for another minute.
  8. Slowly add the boiling water, while stirring continuosly.
  9. Add the tomatoes, sugar, lemon juice and salt. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 4 - 5 minutes.
  10. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
